Colourful – Even More Colourful – Mama Africa:
African Circus Tours Austria with a
New Show in 2011
After three years, the African circus Mama Africa follows its success story of 2008 with a new show for the coming season. The ‘Circus of the Senses’ returns to Austria in February 2011 with new attractions. The new programme will transport the audience into a dazzling world and offers top class and highly amusing entertainment. Approximately 40 artists from various African countries - amongst them Tanzania, Ethiopia, Kenya, the Sudan, Egypt and South Africa - offer the audience a colourful and exiting circus show with a mixture of acrobatics, artistry, music and dance in which one can experience a whole cosmos of thrill and excitement, sensual pleasure, emotions, surprises and unrestrained joy of life. Classical circus elements, such as juggling, artistic contortions and a rope act form part of the two hour programme, as do African live music and colourful costumes correct in every detail. Favourites of the audience, such as the contortionists Lazaro and Hasani from Kenya, and the brothers Ramadhani from Tanzania presenting hand-to-hand artistry, generated waves of enthusiasm during the last tour and, with new acts, again form part of Mama Africa in 2011.
Winston Ruddle, who used to be a street artist and circus performer and has now founded a school for circus artists in Tanzania, is responsible for the artistic direction and the production of Mama Africa. In his school, he trains promising talent from all parts of Africa and then introduces them to the public in Europe through his show Mama Africa. The audience’s old favourites and new performers will again, without doubt, win the spectators over to the new show. The new programme of Mama Africa includes, amongst other things, an African style Rola-Rola act, in which the artists balance on a board resting on roles and offer an artistic performance at a level that can easily compare with any other international act. For the first time, Mama Africa also includes a rope act, presented by a delicate female Tanzanian artist. The unicycle act has also been altered for the new programme: Jonas from Ethiopia is without doubt at the level of any well-known BMX star. The agile artist presents his tricks on unicycles and bicycles of various sizes and almost effortlessly jumps, climbs and easily moves around on them.
